3 possible reasons for A-Rod's presser
Just 24 hours removed from Mark Teixeira announcing his intention to retire at the end of the season, the New York Yankees and Alex Rodriguez are set to host a press conference Sunday morning.
The club didn't disclose what Rodriguez plans to announce, though there's been speculation in recent days that his time in pinstripes could be coming to an end.
Because you never know with A-Rod, here are three possible reasons for his presser:
Yankees release him
Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller, and Carlos Beltran are all gone. Teixeira, too, will soon be gone. The Yankees are retooling in order to become younger and there really is no reason to keep Rodriguez on the roster. Though he's been controversy free, his playing status everyday has become a distraction. Manager Joe Girardi hasn't been able to find a way to get A-Rod in the lineup, and he's said the aging slugger won't take at-bats away from other players. Rodriguez has stated publicly that he would be at peace if the club was to release him, and the Yankees could buy out the approximately $24 million remaining on his contract, allowing them both to move on.
Announcing retirement
Rodriguez doesn't want to go out like this. After 22 years in the majors, three MVPs, 14 All-Star Games, and a World Series ring, Rodriguez will go down as one of the game's greatest players (PED issues aside). The two sides will agree that Rodriguez will receive at-bats the remainder of the year in order for him to chase 700 homers, while working out a way to buy out the remainder of his deal. He walks away with Tex at the end of the year.
Taking rest of season off, returns in 2017
Under contract next season and four home runs shy of 700, Rodriguez will shut it down for the remainder of the year with ambitions to come back refreshed for 2017. The decision would save Girardi from being asked everyday about Rodriguez's playing status, while also giving Rodriguez time to rest his body. A-Rod came back strong after serving a one-year suspension in 2015 and will be motivated to return in order to reach the homer milestone in pinstripes. The move would also allow the team to keep Rodriguez in the clubhouse, where he's been heralded as being a strong mentor for the organization's younger players.
