Donaldson says dustup with Gibbons was over cologne
One second Josh Donaldson and John Gibbons are nose to nose in the dugout, the next we're talking about cologne.
After the Toronto Blue Jays claimed the series with a 7-4 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday afternoon, the focal point of the day was the scuffle that unfolded in the dugout.
Watch: Donaldson, Gibbons in heated dugout exchange
When reporters asked Donaldson in the locker room what happened, his answer was one for the ages.
"Hit my bat against the thing, Gibby asked me what kind of cologne I was wearing," Donaldson told reporters. "I said it's this new cologne called Tom Ford I just got. He's like, 'really,' so he got kinda close to me I guess got a good whiff of it and it's like, 'hey man back up,' so I was like, 'I'll give you some after the game,' so we were separated."
The incident occurred in the third inning, after Donaldson struck out for the second time in two at-bats against CC Sabathia. Upon his return to the dugout, he slammed his bat down, prompting Gibbons to have a chat with him. Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Thole stepped in the middle of it.
When he came back up in the fifth, Donaldson scored a run and low-five slapped Gibbons in the dugout, according to the Toronto Star.
"Told him after first at-bat, get a new bat that one's not working," Gibbons said of the run-in. "He took same one up there the second time, didn't work."
The brief scuffle came close to the 10-year anniversary of Gibbons smelling Ted Lilly's cologne back on Aug. 21, 2006.
Gibbons had removed Lilly from the game after he surrendered five runs in 2 1/3 innings, but Lilly didn't want to come off the mound before handing over the ball.
When they both returned to the dugout, Gibbons went after Lilly twice, once in the hallway, as trainers and players rushed over to break up a heated situation.
