The NBA preaseason officially starts on October 1. Throughout September and October, theScore will be updating our fantasy rankings, both by position and Top 200 players overall.
These rankings will reflect standard scoring formats, taking into account each player's ability to produce in the following categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, 3-point shots made, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and turnovers.
Position Rankings
PG | SG | SF | PF | C | Top 200
(updated Oct. 24)
RANK | PLAYER | TEAM |
---|---|---|
1 | James Harden | HOU |
2 | Stephen Curry | GSW |
3 | Giannis Antetokounmpo | IND |
4 | Kawhi Leonard | SAS |
5 | Jimmy Butler | CHI |
6 | Eric Bledsoe | PHX |
7 | C.J. McCollum | POR |
8 | Kyrie Irving | CLE |
9 | Klay Thompson | GSW |
10 | DeMar DeRozan | TOR |
Harden averaged 29 points, 7.5 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game last season. Now he gets to see how that production scales with Mike D'Antoni's famous seven-seconds-or-less offense. If the pace of those halcyon Steve Nash teams are any indication, Harden's statistical production could reach absurd levels. He could be the top player in fantasy basketball this season.
George showed incredible durability last season despite missing the prior campaign with a gruesome leg injury. He leap-frogs Leonard, who despite a similar two-way skill-set has his potential capped by playing alongside another high-usage All-Star in LaMarcus Aldridge in what should still be a team-oriented Spurs squad in the post-Tim Duncan era.
RANK | PLAYER | TEAM |
---|---|---|
11 | Nicolas Batum | CHA |
12 | Victor Oladipo | OKC |
13 | Andrew Wiggins | MIN |
14 | Brandon Knight | PHX |
15 | Gordon Hayward | UTH |
16 | Goran Dragic | MIA |
17 | Bradley Beal | WAS |
18 | Evan Fournier | ORL |
19 | Dwyane Wade | CHI |
20 | Trevor Ariza | HOU |
It will be interesting to see how Wiggins adjusts in Year 3 - his first under new coach Tom Thibodeau. While his points per game improved and his rebounding fell off slightly (a product of Karl-Anthony Towns' presence on the glass), Wiggins should expect to be one of the leaders in minutes per game this season; just ask former Thibodeau wings Butler and Luol Deng.
Fournier benefits from the Magic's decision to swap Oladipo for Serge Ibaka. He still needs to develop more consistency as a scorer to move into the next tier; too many 20-point-per-game streaks were followed by borderline unplayable fantasy boxscores.
RANK | PLAYER | TEAM |
---|---|---|
21 | Devin Booker | PHO |
22 | Rodney Hood | UTA |
23 | Reggie Jackson | DET |
24 | Jeremy Lin | BKN |
25 | Zach LaVine | MIN |
26 | Jordan Clarkson | LAL |
27 | Eric Gordon | HOU |
28 | J.J. Redick | LAC |
29 | Kent Bazemore | ATL |
30 | Wesley Matthews | DAL |
Booker could be a bust candidate after being one of the brightest spots in Phoenix in a lost campaign. It's no fault of his either; when healthy, Bledsoe and Knight form a fantastic scoring backcourt. Booker will need to develop parts of his game that don't involve shooting the ball, but it's a positive sign that he has edged out Knight for a starter's job.
Bazemore took a step forward as a scorer but some of that momentum will be lost while the Hawks attempt to integrate Dwight Howard into the offense. He'll still be a key contributor, but with Howard joining Paul Millsap in the frontcourt and Dennis Schroder promoted to starting PG duties, there simply might be too many mouths to feed.
RANK | PLAYER | TEAM |
---|---|---|
31 | Kentavious Caldwell-Pope | DET |
32 | Monta Ellis | IND |
33 | Avery Bradley | BOS |
34 | Tyreke Evans | NOR |
35 | George Hill | UTH |
36 | Will Barton | DEN |
37 | Buddy Hield | NOR |
38 | Rondae Hollis-Jefferson | BKN |
39 | Lou Williams | LAL |
40 | Wilson Chandler | DEN |
The Nuggets' backcourt is one of the key fantasy storylines to watch. Emmanuel Mudiay and Gary Harris are back as presumptive starters (though Harris will be out for the first two-to-three weeks of the season), as is fringe sixth-man candidate Barton. The team also drafted Kentucky star Jamal Murray with a lottery pick.
The wild card is Wilson Chandler, who returns after a season lost to injury. Chandler is a proven 14 point-per-game scorer with solid rebounding numbers for a wing, but with so many options in the backcourt, it's unlikely he immediately sees 30 minutes a game. Still, he's worth a late flier.

43 | Evan Turner | POR |

47 | Courtney Lee | NYK |

Now absent from the top 50 shooting guards is Milwaukee Bucks wing Khris Middleton. His recovery from a torn hamstring puts him on track to return to the team in March. We've seen professional athletes come back from devastating injuries ahead of schedule, but even 20 games from Middleton won't compare to 70-plus from a dependable 3-and-D wing like Danny Green. He has no draft-day value outside of deep keeper leagues.
