AFC Bournemouth announced Monday the club has signed versatile defender Marc Wilson from Stoke City, bringing the Republic of Ireland international back to the Vitality Stadium on a two-year deal for a reported £2-million fee, as Wilson had previously spent 2007 on loan for two spells with the Cherries.
During that time, Wilson made 27 appearances for Bournemouth, and the club's chief executive Neill Blake says the Cherries are glad to have him back.
"He'll add a wealth of experience to Eddie (Howe)'s defensive options, having played in the top flight and internationally," Blake said in a club statement. "It's yet more competition for places, which will help the squad thrive in our second season in the Premier League."
The 28-year-old was equally pleased to return to the club, despite making 177 Premier League appearances with Stoke City over a six-year tenure.
"I know a lot of the guys down here and as soon I heard the interest from the club it was very appealing to me," he told the club's official website. "I enjoyed my years at Stoke, but I spoke with the manager Mark Hughes and we both agreed it was time to move on – I am excited now to start a new chapter in my career."
For its part, Bournemouth will welcome any defensive reinforcements, having already dropped a 3-1 season opener to Manchester United last weekend and having finished last season with 67 goals conceded and a -22 goal differential.
The Cherries also parted ways with defenders Sylvain Distin, Tommy Elphick and Stephane Zubar over the off-season, permanently signing Australia left full-back Brad Smith from Liverpool and bringing on Nathan Ake from Chelsea on loan to shore up its defensive ranks.
