Sunderland announced Wednesday the club has sold midfielder Jordi Gomez to Wigan Athletic on a permanent deal. The Spaniard now returns to the club that originally sold him to the Black Cats in 2014.

Gomez, 31, made 39 appearances for Sunderland during his time at Stadium of Light, scoring six goals in that time. He returns to Wigan, where he plied his trade from 2009-14, scoring 28 goals in 162 appearances.

A move from Sunderland seemed imminent in January, when Gomez was loaned to Blackburn. He now returns to the Latics for a second spell.

"It's really nice to be back; I am ready for the challenge," Gomez told the club's website. "I've been up to Sunderland and my first year up there was quite good, the second one wasn't as good and so I had to make a decision.

"Obviously it's nice that the club wanted me and Wigan were one of the first clubs to want me, that's one of the reasons I have come here and I am really looking forward to my new time in Wigan."
