Notre Dame's Butler facing 2 felony charges
Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler faces two felony charges for battery against a police officer and resisting an officer.
The charges are still preliminary, despite multiple reports that cited the police department saying they had been turned official. Butler, whose bond was set at $1,000, is scheduled for arraignment Monday at 1 p.m. ET.
Butler was arrested early Saturday morning following an altercation outside a local bar. He allegedly intervened in a confrontation between multiple women, and shoved one. When police ordered Butler to step back, he instead lunged at an officer and began throwing punches, South Bend police Lt. Joseph Galea told the South Bend Tribune.
The officers used a stun gun to get Butler under control, according to the Associated Press.
"Any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university," Notre Dame said in a statement Saturday morning. "The university will determine if additional sanctions should apply to any or all of the students charged."
The Fighting Irish released the statement after news of Butler's arrest, along with the arrests of five other players stemming from a separate incident, became public knowledge.
Butler, a senior, is recovering from a foot injury and isn't expected to be ready to play football until October. In his three seasons at South Bend, Butler's played in 37 games, including three starts, and has notched 39 tackles and an interception.
If healthy, he would have been a strong contender to start in the Irish secondary.
