Since the Pittsburgh Pirates acquired Ivan Nova from the New York Yankees in exchange for two prospects at the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline, the right-hander's pitched remarkably well, which could potentially help him cash in on a long-term contract.

The Pirates have made a pair of extension offers to the pending free agent, reports Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, citing sources.

Although the figures being exchanged aren't clear, a source said Nova's representatives are looking for a deal in the range of $70 million over five years.

According to a source, the Pirates made a second offer after learning of Nova's price tag, and talks are ongoing.

If the two sides fail to work out a deal, Nova would join a free-agent class of starting pitchers containing the likes of Andrew Cashner, Rich Hill, and Jeremy Hellickson.

During his tenure in Pirates black and gold, the 29-year-old hurler has helped stabilize the club's rotation, posting a 5-1 record with a 2.93 ERA across nine starts, including two complete games.

Over his seven seasons in the bigs, Nova is 58-40 with a 4.30 ERA and 1.37 WHIP across 140 games, 127 of them starts.
