Here are theScore's outfielder value rankings for Friday, September 23 (all stats exclude Thursday's games):
Value Rankings
C | 1B/DH | 2B | SS | 3B | OF | SP
Top Options
NAME | VALUE | OPPONENT |
---|---|---|
Manuel Margot (SD) | vs. SF | 8 |
Charlie Blackmon (COL) | at LAD | 8 |
Robbie Grossman (MIN) | vs. SEA | 8 |
Margot was ranked MLB.com's 27th-best prospect. He hit .304 with a .351 OBP in 124 games with Triple-A El Paso but the real attraction is the juice he brings on the basepaths; he tallied 12 triples and 30 steals in the minors this year, as well as six HRs and 21 doubles. If he plays on Friday, he'll be making just his second major-league start. His activation may have gone under the radar.
Grossman has slugged .636 against LHPs this season. 39.0 percent of his hits against lefties have gone for extra-base, including six home runs. He's also gone hitless in just one of his last 11 starts; just make sure he's actually in the lineup on Friday as he's made several pinch hit appearances lately.
Mid-Tier Targets
NAME | VALUE | OPPONENT |
---|---|---|
Andrew Benintendi (BOS) | at TB | 7 |
Domingo Santana (MIL) | vs. CIN | 7 |
Cesar Hernandez (PHI) | at NYM | 6 |
Benintendi has an extra-base hit in five straight games. The only thing keeping him from the Top Options tier is a date with Chris Archer at Tropicana Field, where the Rays' staff ace has a 2.63 ERA in 15 starts this season.
Santana was rendered unplayable by mid-season because of his inability to hit against RHPs, but since returning from the minors in mid-August, the Brewers' outfielder has hit .308 with a .864 OPS against righties. With two HRs and four doubles in his last seven games, he's hitting well enough to warrant consideration as a third OF in a GPP lineup.
Nothing to See Here
NAME | VALUE | OPPONENT |
---|---|---|
Matt Kemp (ATL) | at SD | 4 |
Max Kepler (MIN) | vs. SEA | 4 |
Yasiel Puig (LAD) | vs. COL | 3 |
Baseball's most mercurial figure is having a rough stretch at the dish; Puig has hit just 3-for-25 in his last 10 games. Perpetuating the legend of Puig's inconsistent flashes of brilliance, all three of those hits went for extra bases. Against an RHP on Friday, don't expect any more fireworks as he's slugging just .378 against righties.
