Auburn's weird, wild finish vs. LSU: Ecstasy, agony, then victory (again)

Auburn and LSU had quite the finish Saturday.

First, it looked like Auburn had saved coach Gus Malzahn's job, stopping Travin Dural on the 2-yard line at the end of the fourth quarter. However, a flag on an LSU illegal shift gave the team an extra play with one second left on the clock, confusing many spectators.

LSU quarterback Danny Etling scrambled and found D.J. Chark in the corner of the end zone for what appeared to be a 19-18 win. Les Miles and his squad rushed the field and hoisted Chark on their shoulders.

But another look showed that LSU didn't get the snap off in time, which gave Auburn the 18-13 win after all.

''I don't know if I've ever come as close to winning a game and finishing second as today,'' Miles said after the game, which dropped LSU to 2-2 on the season.

For his part, Malzahn was sure the clock had already run out and Auburn would be granted the win, despite the on-field celebrations of LSU.

''I was pretty confident time had expired,'' Malzahn said. ''It was just a matter of going to the booth and confirming it.''
