Virginia dismisses Austin Nichols
Virginia has dismissed forward Austin Nichols after he played just one game with the Cavaliers as a transfer from Memphis, the school announced Friday.
"It's a privilege to be a part of this program and Austin has lost that privilege," head coach Tony Bennett said. "We have standards for our student-athletes and when those standards aren't met, there are consequences and this is the unfortunate consequence."
A reason for Nichols' banishment wasn't provided, but the junior - who was forced to sit out last season as an undergraduate transfer from the Tigers - had missed part of the preseason and the opening contest of the regular season because of a team-issued suspension.
Nichols, a onetime five-star recruit, had 11 points and three rebounds in 16 minutes of action during his lone game with the Hoos. He averaged 13.3 points and 6.1 rebounds two seasons ago as a sophomore at Memphis.
Nichols was expected to help Virginia replace the lost production of last year's star tandem of Malcolm Brogdon and Anthony Gill, both of whom graduated from the program.
The eighth-ranked Cavs are getting set to take a 2-0 record into a Sunday meeting with Yale.
