Baylor's Grobe doesn't plan to continue coaching beyond 2016
Baylor interim head coach Jim Grobe said Monday he doesn't plan to stay in coaching past the 2016 season.
"My plan was always to be with Baylor for this year. I have no plans to coach beyond this year," he told reporters, as relayed by Kevin Lyttle of the Austin American Statesman.
Grobe was tabbed as the Bears' temporary leader over the summer, after the school parted ways with scandal-plagued Art Briles. At the time, Grobe said he hoped to make his stay in Waco last beyond one year.
"I can see myself being here," Grobe said at his introductory news conference in June. "I love all the people at Baylor, the people in our program, and all the coaches are caring coaches and care about our kids.
"So beyond 2016, I would be blessed to have the opportunity to continue to coach. But like most coaches, we need to play well and our kids need to do the right things both on and off the field. But I think my attitude and our coaches' attitude, if we can take care of business, we'll be alright."
Evidently, that vision has changed.
Baylor's season under Grobe began on a positive note, as the Bears raced to a 6-0 start. However, Baylor has since tumbled to a 6-5 mark, dropping each of its last five games.
The struggles over the second half of the season have prompted questions about Baylor's resolve as a team, and whether its players have thrown in the towel. Grobe, though, insisted nobody's quit on the Bears.
"Absolutely not. I have no problem with the effort players have given," he said Monday.
"We lost confidence. I really thought we should have beaten Texas. After we lost that, our focus was off, the season kind of got derailed."
Baylor has one game left in the regular season - a Saturday tilt with West Virginia. After that, the Bears - who are eligible for a bowl game - will decide collectively either to accept a postseason invite or end their taxing season early.
