Cousins appreciates Joerger's support in Bee incident: 'He gets it'
All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins has a documented history of poor relationships with a majority of his head coaches. A positive rapport is slowly being developed with Dave Joerger, though, and following the new Kings coach's comments concerning The Sacramento Bee piece that got Boogie riled up, their relationship could be getting even stronger.
"I appreciate it. I think he understands where I'm coming from," Cousins told The Undefeated's Marc J. Spears. "I don't really think it had anything to do with him trying to show that he has his player's back. I generally think he understands where I'm coming from."
Joerger recently called the coverage of what transpired between Cousins and writer Andy Furillo "ridiculous," with the Bee releasing a video of the 26-year-old confronting Furillo after an article was published concerning his involvement in an alleged assault outside of a New York City nightclub. In it, Cousins' younger brother, Jaleel, was mentioned, which the big man took great exception to.
"We're going to have some real f---ing issues," Cousins said to Furillo. "Don't ever mention my brother again."
Joerger himself has also been at war with the publication in the past, as a piece was written about his new home in Sacramento while mentioning the names and ages of his wife and children back in August.
"Of course, he dealt with a similar situation with the same people," Cousins added. "He gets it. I respect him for that. I respect him for speaking out. He doesn't have to. He went about it the right way. He spoke out on it. I respect him for that."
