Watch: McConnell caps 76ers' comeback with buzzer-beater vs. Knicks
It's been quite the stretch for Philadelphia 76ers point guard T.J. McConnell, and for the New York Knicks, if for completely different reasons.
Their divergent paths met for one glorious instant Wednesday night, when the Knicks fell to the Sixers on McConnell's baseline turnaround at the buzzer - New York's ninth loss in 10 games.
The Knicks, who had Derrick Rose back in the starting lineup after he mysteriously went AWOL for Monday's game against the New Orleans Pelicans, built a 17-point lead in the first half, led by as many as 13 in the fourth quarter, and still led by 10 with just over two minutes to play.
Joel Embiid led a spirited late comeback, but the Knicks still had the ball, up a point, with under 28 seconds left. After they milked the clock, Kristaps Porzingis got a clean look at a corner three that would've effectively iced the game. He airballed it.
The Sixers then corralled the loose ball and raced the other way, neglecting to use a timeout as the final seconds ticked away. It looked like things would end disastrously, until McConnell - who dropped a career-high 17 assists on Friday - bailed them out with a turnaround over Carmelo Anthony just before time expired, setting off mass hysteria at Wells Fargo Center.
Embiid was duly appreciative of his teammate's heroics.
Anthony ... decidedly less so.
The Sixers have now won four of their past five games - in other words, as many wins as they had in their first 41 games last season - and are now 5-1 this season when McConnell has started.
