Former Georgia, Dolphins DE Quentin Moses dies in house fire
Former Georgia defensive end Quentin Moses died Sunday morning as a result of a house fire in Monroe, Ga. He was 33.
Moses was not the only reported fatality in the fire, as both Andria Godard and her 10-year-old daughter, Jasmine Godard, were also found inside the home, according Ellen Eldridge of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, citing fire officials.
Fire chief Keith Glass told Eldridge that the house was fully engulfed in flames when help arrived, and that Moses had made his way out of the house, but was found unconscious and was later pronounced dead at Clearview Medical Center.
"We are all sadden by this life taking tragedy," Glass said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims' families."
Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity issued a statement shortly after news broke of Moses' death, echoing the many sentiments and condolences shared by those who knew him.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Quentin's family," McGarity said in the statement. "We are shocked and saddened by this tragic news. Quentin was an outstanding representative of not only the University of Georgia but also his hometown of Athens. On behalf of UGA Athletics, we extend our most sincere condolences to his family."
Moses made a name for himself as a star defensive end with the Bulldogs from 2004-06, earning consensus first-team all-SEC honors in 2005. Current Georgia head coach Kirby Smart offered his condolences after learning of the tragedy.
After being drafted in the third round of the NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders, Moses found a home for himself with the Miami Dolphins, where he appeared in 44 games from 2007-10, registering 35 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery over that span.
Following his playing career, Moses accepted the position of assistant football coach and defensive line coach at Reinhardt University, an NAIA program located in Waleska, Ga.
There's no immediately known cause of the fire, and multiple agencies continue to investigate.
