Redskins GM McCloughan away from combine due to death in family

Geoff Burke / USA TODAY Sports

Washington Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan is not at the NFL Scouting Combine this week in Indianapolis because he is dealing with a death in the family, he told Mike Jones of the Washington Post.

McCloughan's grandmother died in February, a source told CSN Mid-Atlantic's JP Finlay.

A team spokesperson confirmed McCloughan's absence to Jones, saying the general manager is "taking care of some family matters."

No team personnel - including McCloughan - were scheduled to speak to media at the combine and president Bruce Allen has reportedly forbidden the GM from talking to reporters.

One of McCloughan's supposed strengths is the draft, so his absence could have a major effect on Washington's approach. Team officials were also expected to meet with representatives for the Redskins' impending free agents at the combine.

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles reportedly left the combine to attend his ex-wife's funeral.
