Report: Browns strongly considering taking Trubisky with No. 1 pick
Don't lock Myles Garrett into the No. 1 overall slot in this year's draft just yet.
The Cleveland Browns are strongly considering drafting former North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky with the top pick, league sources told Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com.
It's been widely assumed that Garrett would be the Browns' pick at the top of the draft, but with a significant hole at quarterback, it's possible Cleveland will pass on the former Texas A&M standout in favor of its top-rated pivot.
Browns head coach Hue Jackson reportedly believes his favorite quarterback won't be available with the team's second first-round pick (12th overall), so they could be prioritizing fixing the game's most important position.
Trubisky was essentially just a one-year starter in college, but Jackson said that isn't an issue if a prospect showcases enough positive traits.
"It's a small sample size but at the same time he still played,'' Jackson said. "I don't think that's what's important. If a guy demonstrates the characteristics you're looking for, it's important to keep digging and find out more but I don't get concerned about that part of it as long as a guy can do what we need him to do."
At this stage of the offseason, it's also possible the Browns are attempting to leave what they intend to do with the No. 1 overall pick a mystery in order to fully assess their options, including trading the selection to a team that wants a quarterback.
