Cook's explosiveness fails to impress at combine
Heading into the scouting combine, Florida State's Dalvin Cook had a chance to take the lead in the race to be the top running back selected at the draft.
While Cook's results weren't necessarily red flag-worthy, he failed to show the explosiveness scouts were expecting from a potential top-10 pick.
He competed on the field with the rest of the running backs Friday, but most of his official results weren't listed until Saturday, revealing his speed and quickness may not be as elite as perceived.
Cook produced a top-seven 40-yard-dash time among running backs with a 4.49-second run, but with fellow top prospect Leonard Fournette putting up a time of 4.51, the Florida State product can't argue that he's noticeably faster than his biggest competition.
Fournette didn't compete in the three-cone drill, but Cook wasn't able to take advantage of the stage. He posted a 7.27-second time, which ranked 14th among the 16 participants and was a full 0.7 seconds slower than top performer Christian McCaffrey.
Here are some other notable 3-cone drill times:
Player | College | Time |
---|---|---|
Christian McCaffrey | Stanford | 6.57 |
Aaron Jones | Texas El-Paso | 6.82 |
Stanley Williams | Kentucky | 6.86 |
Jeremy McNichols | Boise St. | 6.93 |
Wayne Gallman | Clemson | 7.17 |
Samaje Perine | Oklahoma | 7.26 |
Despite being expected to be among the fastest running backs, the only drill that saw Cook finish in the top five at his position was the bench press.
