Myles Garrett making Browns' decision with No. 1 overall pick extremely easy
It's a wrap.
For the first time since 2012, a debate surrounding the No. 1 overall pick is largely unnecessary. That's not to say there had been much of one leading up to the combine, but the football world should save itself the trouble of cooking up any such discussion through March and April, as well.
After a stellar workout in all phases, the Cleveland Browns can go ahead and fill out a draft card with Myles Garrett's name.
The former Texas A&M star got things started Sunday with a 40 time of 4.64 seconds and a 10-yard split of 1.63. As a 6-foot-4, 272-pound edge rusher, those times are impressive enough. The fact that he clocked anywhere near that range while seemingly stumbling toward the finish line sheds some light on just how much of a freak we're all watching.
Next up were the jumps, which have a direct correlation to the explosiveness necessary to succeed as a pass-rusher. Along with a broad jump of 10-foot-8, tied for second among defensive linemen, Garrett posted a 41-inch vertical that stands as the second-best score of any player at the position in the last decade.
Call it the "Underwear Olympics" if you must, but these measurables matter.
The impressive display of athleticism can be taken as confirmation of everything Garrett put on tape throughout a standout career at College Station. For anyone worried about a production level, racking up 31 sacks and 47 tackles for loss against SEC competition is about as good is gets.
Cleveland's need at the quarterback position is, of course, abundantly clear. In today's NFL, teams don't have a hope in competing for a Super Bowl with anything other than a Top 10 talent leading the way under center.
But this rebuild was always going to be a process, and there's no Andrew Luck-type quarterback unquestionably worthy of the top overall spot. Reaching for another play in hopes of addressing that position just isn't an option if you have to pass up a generational talent like Garrett to do so.
In the mold of Von Miller and Khalil Mack, Garrett will be the foundation of Cleveland's defense for years to come. Getting an elite pass-rusher at No. 1 overall, and another top talent at No. 12, is the best way to make the most of a stacked draft class.
There will be gamesmanship leading up to the draft, with many attempting to float a flaw in his game or the possibility of a blockbuster trade down, and rightfully so. But Garrett is without question one of the best prospects making the jump to the NFL in recent memory.
At a time when the Browns have to make a lot of difficult decisions in regards to the future of a long-suffering franchise, this one's actually fairly simple.
Myles Garrett no matter what.
