Ranking the NBA's most efficient 70-plus point performances
Devin Booker's brilliant 70-point performance Friday against the Boston Celtics came with the requisite critics, and understandably so. The Phoenix Suns packed in their season long ago, so there's little to lose by having the team's best shooter go for a benchmark record.
Despite the Suns' loss in the contest, Booker actually put up a fairly efficient night (as opposed to Kobe Bryant's 60 points on a wild-west 50 shots in his career finale), although not quite at the same level as some other members of the NBA's 70-point club. Arguments often fly over the value of huge scoring regular-season games; What was the era? How good or bad were the teams involved?

So with that in mind, here's a cursory list of the most efficient 70-plus performances based on three simple factors: The player's true shooting percentage in the contest, whether or not his team won, and, to a lesser extent, the success of that team that season.
Surprise, surprise: Wilt is not No. 1.
1. Kobe's 81, Jan. 22, 2006
Points | TS% | Result | Season record *denotes playoff appearance |
---|---|---|---|
81 | 73.9 | W | 45-37* |
For whatever reason, Toronto Raptors coach Sam Mitchell refused to double-team Kobe, but that doesn't take away from one of the most efficient shooting nights Bryant ever had. He also accounted for 66.3 percent of the Lakers' points, by far the biggest proportion of any 70-plus point scorer.
2. David Robinson's 71, Apr. 24, 1994
Points | TS% | Result | Season record *denotes playoff appearance |
---|---|---|---|
71 | 68.3 | W | 55-27* |
Robinson needed a big night in the final game of the regular season to win his first NBA scoring title, and he did just that, dropping 71 points on the Los Angeles Clippers to edge out Shaquille O'Neal.
3. Wilt Chamberlain's 100, Mar. 3, 1962
Points | TS% | Result | Season record *denotes playoff appearance |
---|---|---|---|
100 | 64.9 | W | 49-31* |
The century mark against the New York Knicks is the one everyone talks about because nobody has ever come close to that point total again. It was also one of 10 games in the 1961-62 season that Chamberlain scored 50 or more points. He added 25 rebounds in this contest as well. Talk about total domination over the league.
Yet Chamberlain was also on the losing end of three 70-point games, and one shooting performance in his 78-point outing was particularly mediocre considering his position of center. Here are the rest of the 70-point scorers, ranked strictly by true shooting percentage.
