A.J. Styles opens WrestleMania with win over Shane McMahon
What was billed as a straight-up wrestling match got down and dirty Sunday at WrestleMania 33, as A.J. Styles escaped with a victory over "SmackDown Live" commissioner Shane McMahon to begin the event.
Heading into his one-on-one encounter with Shane-O-Mac, Styles was confident the boss' son couldn't hang with him in a straight-up wrestling match. During the early portion of their bout, McMahon proved he could do just that against the Phenomenal One, holding his own quite well.
The turning point came when Styles accidentally incapacitated referee Mike Chioda with a head kick, leaving the door open for weapons to be introduced.
Styles brought two trash cans into the fray, even attempting to use McMahon's signature coast-to-coast dropkick against him. That strategy didn't pan out, though, as McMahon drilled Styles in his face with the foreign object in mid-air ...
... before heading to the top rope and doing it himself:
When that couldn't keep Styles down for the three count, McMahon brought his opponent to the outside, placed him on the nearby announce table, and went for his patented elbow drop.
No dice.
Styles tossed McMahon back into the ring to finish him off with his Phenomenal Forearm, but McMahon reversed it into a tornado DDT.
Putting everything on the line, McMahon threw caution to the wind for a dangerous shooting star press, but couldn't connect.
Picking up the pieces, Styles mustered the strength for another Phenomenal Forearm, striking McMahon right in his grill for the win.
