Robben: It's a 'shame' great match was decided by referee

Arjen Robben was none too pleased with the performance of referee Viktor Kassai and his assistants after Bayern Munich was bounced from the Champions League by Real Madrid on Tuesday in the Spanish capital.

The Bavarian behemoth was on the wrong end of a 4-2 extra time result at the Santiago Bernabeu, a scoreline that saw Los Blancos reach the semi-finals of the competition by virtue of a 6-3 aggregate victory.

Madrid, though, got the proverbial "rub of the green" on the evening, as Arturo Vidal was sent off in the 84th minute after being shown a second yellow card for what appeared to be a fair tackle.

To make matters worse for Carlo Ancelotti and Co., Cristiano Ronaldo proceeded to score two goals in extra time - effectively ending the contest - that replays showed were offside.

Robben, speaking to Jan Aage Fjortoft of Viasat Fotball, said it was a "shame" that the heavyweight tilt was influenced so heavily by the officials.

"It was two top teams, a joy to watch. And then a game like that is being decided by crucial decisions by the referee."

He added: "Normally I don't like to talk about referee, normally you have to look at yourselves and the mistakes you make, what you've done wrong, but in this case it's not one, it's more crucial decisions which decide a game.

"And that's a shame because it was an advertisement for football decided by someone with a whistle."

His comments weren't inaccurate, though Robben himself did benefit from a Kassai error. His dive was rewarded with a penalty kick, which allowed Bayern to take the lead early in the second half.
