Flea's shirt at the Super Bowl: Free Shabazz Muhammad
It's no secret that Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player Flea is a big UCLA Bruins fan, despite the fact that he enrolled in music classes at USC in 2008.
Education be damned, Flea reps the white, blue and gold hard, including an electrifying (albeit ultimately botched) performance of the Star Spangled Banner before a UCLA-Arizona game in January.
On Sunday, Flea pushed his pro-UCLA image even further. Performing at halftime of the Super Bowl with the Peppers and Bruno Mars, the rock legend wore a shirt with "FREE SHABAZZ MUHAMMAD" written on it.
That caught Muhammad's attention, who appreciated the love:
Muhammad, of course, is a UCLA alum now playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 14th overall pick in this year's draft, the former All-Pac-12 first team player and McDonald's All-American has been glued to the bench for Rick Adelman's squad.
Muhammad has appeared in just 13 games, totaling but 51 minutes. He's yet to even play 10 minutes in an NBA game, so it's really difficult to get a read on how he'd look as an NBA player. His four-game stint in the D-League was a rousing success (24.5 points and 9.8 rebounds on 57.1 percent shooting), but since being called up on Jan. 13 he's played just nine minutes in the team's 10 games.
This is a player who averaged 17.9 points as a freshman at UCLA last year and was expected to be able to be a facilitator on the wing at the NBA level. That can very well still happen, but not while he's glued to the bench.
Free Shabazz Muhammad, indeed.
