TMZ: Corey Crawford under investigation for spraying annoying fan with water bottle
Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford has found himself in some hot water ahead of Game 5 of the Western Conference Final on Wednesday night, and it has nothing to do with his team facing elimination against the Los Angeles Kings.
According to TMZ, Crawford is "under investigation by the LAPD after allegedly squirting a heckler in the face with a water bottle during Monday's Game 4 loss the Kings." Here are additional details from TMZ Sports:
We know ... 27-year-old Kings fan Clark Wong filed a BATTERY report Monday night claiming he was "sprayed" by the hockey player at Staples Center.
TMZ Sports spoke with Wong who says he was sitting behind the Blackhawks bench -- and was heckling Crawford -- when the goalie was pulled from the game toward the end of the 3rd period.
That's when Crawford -- who's in the middle of a 6-year, $36 MILLION contract -- allegedly whipped out a water bottle and blasted him right in the face.
Wong says he believes the bottle was filled with backwash -- along with water -- and it has caused serious irritation to his eyes. Wong says he's going to a doctor to get his eyes checked.
League sources tell TMZ Sports ... Wong was ejected from the game 3 to 5 minutes after the spraying incident for "taunting the players" and it was while he was being escorted out of the arena that he began to rub his eyes, complaining about the pain.
We're told Crawford filed a report with police before leaving the arena.
For now this report should be taken with a significant heaping of sodium, as an LAPD spokesperson reportedly told CBS Chicago that no investigation is taking place.
The fan who filed the report, Clark Wong, was contacted by the Chicago Tribune. Wong declined comment, and said that he's been receiving death threats.
Crawford meanwhile wasn't made available to speak the media on Wednesday, though Coach Joel Quenneville did briefly address the matter:
