Report: John Calipari rejected $60-million offer to coach the Cavaliers
How many times can the Cleveland Cavaliers be embarrassed? Let me count the ways.
In the latest example of the Cavaliers drawing the short straw, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reports that before John Calipari signed a 7-year extension to remain as the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, he weighed an offer from the Cavs valued at $60 million over seven years.
As a reference, the highest paid coach by annual average salary is the Clippers' Doc Rivers, who is earning nearly seven million dollars per season. Had he taken the Cavs' job, Calipari would have easily surpassed Rivers' total.
And he turned it down.
And get this, Wojnarowski's report also cites that in addition to the cushy salary, Calipari was also offered the position of president of operations, which would have granted him final say on personnel matters. Keep in mind, the famed college bench boss could have selected any player of his choosing in this year's famed draft class with Cleveland's No. 1 pick.
And he turned it down.
Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has yet to issue a statement on the matter, but fret not, it goes without saying that the Cavaliers will win an NBA title before Calipari does (maybe.)
