Overview

Despite all of Sam Bennett's talent and potential, a pull-up (or lack thereof) at the scouting combine has colored perceptions on the top-ranked North American skater. His on-ice abilities are evident: Bennett plays hard in all four corners of the ice and uses his stellar awareness and deceptive speed to control possession and create chances.

Bennett is not usually the most flashy presence on the ice, but his consistent effort and high energy level is the type of style coaches love to see. He could be anything from a top-six playmaker to a defensive shutdown center at the pro level, but he will need to mature physically before he can get there.

Concerns about strength will likely knock Bennett out of the top spot once the draft rolls around, but it's not a stretch thinking he could turn out be the most accomplished player in his year.

Perhaps intrigued by the constant comparisons to Doug Gilmour, the Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly interested in trading up to draft Bennett, who would give Toronto the potential franchise center it has lacked since Mats Sundin left.

Scouts are saying

ESPN insider Corey Pronman:

It's hard to find a specific part of Bennett's game that is weak ... can play at a high pace and embrace a pressure style with high amounts of effectiveness. ... He sees the ice really well, and can dominate the puck in terms of possession due to his hockey brain on top of his speed and puck skills. ... can lay some quality hits and is a fine defensive forward. He could get stronger, improve his positioning a little, and maybe not try to force the tough plays, but for the most part he's the complete package.

TSN director of scouting Craig Button:

Three things stand out about Bennett: His versatility, an edge to his play and his ability to 'step up' when it counts. Combine this with his skill-level and it makes Sam a top-end prospect.
