The Toronto Blue Jays made an unexpected personnel move Monday afternoon, designating oft-injured reliever Sergio Santos for assignment while promoting left-hander Rob Rasmussen to the active roster.

The 31-year-old has battled persistent health problems since arriving in Toronto prior to the 2012 campaign, requiring at least one stint on the disabled list in each of the last three seasons.

Santos crafted an unsightly 7.78 ERA with a 2.09 WHIP across 24 appearances this season, spending 35 days on the disabled list during the season's nascent stages with a right forearm strain.

Over parts of three seasons with the Blue Jays, Santos authored a 4.83 ERA (3.57 FIP) while averaging 10.4 strikeouts and 4.5 walks per nine innings across 59 appearances.
