The San Diego Padres will be without Cameron Maybin for the next several weeks, as the beleaguered outfielder received a 25-game suspension Wednesday for the use of amphetamines, the league announced.

Maybin's positive test constitutes the latest snag in a career gone terribly awry in recent years, as the 27-year-old has battled persistent injury trouble over the last two seasons, appearing in just 76 games since the beginning of 2013.

Selected 10th overall in the 2005 draft, Maybin opened the 2014 campaign on the disabled list after suffering a torn biceps tendon during Spring Training. Through 62 games this season, Maybin is hitting just .247/.286/.368 (88 OPS+) with one home run and three stolen bases.

Maybin subsequently issued a statement on Facebook in which he explains that the positive test was merely the result of a "genuine effort" to treat his attention deficit disorder:

"I have been undergoing treatment for several years for a medical condition, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), for which I previously had a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). Unfortunately, in my attempts to switch back to a medicine that had been previously ok’d, I neglected to follow all the rules and as a result I tested positive. I want to assure everyone that this was a genuine effort to treat my condition and I was not trying in any way to gain an advantage in my baseball career. I understand that I must accept responsibility for this mistake and I will take my punishment and will not challenge my suspension. I apologize to my family, friends, fans, teammates, and the entire Padres organization. I look forward to returning to the field and contributing to the success of my Club.”

In a corresponding move, the Padres recalled veteran outfielder Jeff Francoeur from Triple-A El Paso to take Maybin's spot on the 25-man roster.
