Flames sign 2014 4th-overall pick Sam Bennett to entry-level contract

The Calgary Flames have signed Kingston Frontenacs centerman Sam Bennett, who was selected with the 4th overall pick at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, to a three-year entry level contract, the club announced on Friday.

Bennett, who made headlines at the NHL Scouting Combine when he failed to record a single pull up, is hopeful that he might crack the Flames roster this upcoming season. The six-foot, 179 pound forward certainly has the skill level to contribute offensively in the NHL, but considering his slight stature, he could perhaps stand to benefit from another year in the CHL.

"It is a surreal feeling," Bennett said of signing his first NHL contract in a team release. "It’s a moment I’ve dreamed of since I was little."

"I think with Sam, obviously we were going to sign him," said Flames general manager Brad Treliving. "I don’t think there was any mystery there. It’s just a matter of getting him slotted in. I think with Sam, it’s a good situation where you get the contract behind him and as I talked to him the other day, now the real work starts.

"This is the next step in the process, getting his contract done. Good for him, but now that part can be put to the backburner and his sole focus is getting ready for the year."
