Injured Bruins McQuaid, Kelly, Seidenberg join informal skate

Don McPeak / USA TODAY Sports

A trio of injured Boston Bruins players – defenders Adam McQuaid and Dennis Seidenberg and forward Chris Kelly – were skating on Tuesday, along with a handful of relatively healthy teammates at an "informal skate somewhere in New England" per WEEI's DJ Bean.

All three players are coming off respective surgeries. For Seidenberg, who often logs first pairing minutes for the Bruins, he's still in the process of returning from a surgical procedure on his ACL and MCL this past January that ended his season. The German-born defender ultimately missed 56 games between the regular season and the playoffs.

McQuaid is coming off ankle surgery in early May, and was expected to take up to eight weeks to fully heal.

Kelly meanwhile underwent surgery on a herniated disc in his back in late May. The 33-year-old pivot appeared in just 57 games last season, scoring nine goals and adding nine assists. Back injuries, and herniated discs in particular, can be tricky; but Kelly seems like he's gearing up for training camp in a couple of weeks time.

The injury-depleted Bruins managed to win the Presidents' Trophy in 2013-14, but were eliminated in the second round at the hands of their ancient rival the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup playoffs. If the Bruins hope to put this spring's playoff disappointment behind them and contend for a championship this upcoming season, the health of this trio – and Seidenberg in particular – will be key.
