Report: Hawks re-sign Elton Brand to 1-year deal

Elton Brand will be returning to the NBA for a 16th season.

On Wednesday, Brand signed a one-year, $2-million contract that will keep him with the Atlanta Hawks, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

Multiple teams were said to be interested in the 35-year-old veteran, who was kicking around the idea of retiring early in the offseason. It's possible that the Hawks' willingness and ability to go beyond the $1.4-million veteran minimum made the difference, or perhaps Brand was just comfortable staying where he spent the 2013-14 season.

Last year, Brand appeared in 73 games for the Hawks, averaging 5.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 19.4 minutes while shooting 53.9 percent from the floor.

A two-time All-Star, Brand has seamlessly transitioned from a 20-point scoring option to a reserve role, providing solid leadership and effective rim protection. In 1,005 NBA games with five different franchises, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft has career averages of 16.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks and ranks in the top-100 in career minutes, free throws, rebounds, blocks, fouls, and points.

This coming season, Brand should slot in as the backup center behind Al Horford, forming a capable reserve frontcourt alongside Pero Antic and Adreian Payne.
