Report: Vanderbilt buying out of 2018 game vs. UMass
Christopher Hanewinckel / USA TODAY Sports
The Vanderbilt Commodores will reportedly not face the University of Massachusetts in 2018 as originally planned.
UMass will be paid the $650,000 this year, according to the New Hampshire Gazette. Massachusetts athletic director John McCutcheon told the publication that Vanderbilt approached UMass about changing the date of the 2018 game, but the Minutemen decided to take the buyout instead.
The SEC requires all conference members, including Vanderbilt, to play one game per season against an opponent from another power conference (the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 or Notre Dame). That could explain the move, which potentially sets up a future agreement with a power conference opponent.
