Buehrle, Stroman may trade places in Jays rotation

Thanks to a hot start to the month of September, the Toronto Blue Jays find themselves in the thick of the American League wild-card race.

Sitting 3 1/2 games back with a pair of upcoming series against division rivals the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles on the horizon, manager John Gibbons is considering shuffling his pitching rotation.

Gibbons admitted to MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm that he has discussed moving Mark Buehrle's start up to Sunday against the Rays, which would move Marcus Stroman to Monday night in Baltimore against the Orioles.

The potential move is intended to give the rookie right-hander an extra day of rest in a crucial spot.

"We've talked about buying Stroman an extra couple of days," Gibbons said. "He's a youngster, like we've been doing all year. We haven't decided on anything but we could do that – Buehrle on Sunday and Stroman on Monday. We've talked about it."

The numbers back up the idea. Buehrle has a 4.67 ERA against the Orioles this season compared to a 2.08 mark against the Rays. Stroman has posted a 5.73 ERA against Tampa, and has yet to face the Orioles.
