Report: Jaguars waive defensive end Chris Smith

Phil Sears / USA TODAY Sports

Ahead of the Jacksonville Jaguars' second game of the 2014 season, the team is waiving fifth-round rookie defensive end Chris Smith, ESPN's Adam Caplan reports.

The move to release a mid-round selection from this year's draft comes as a bit of a surprise, as Smith was expected to help the Jaguars' pass rush early on.

Should it become official and Smith clears waivers, he would be a candidate to be signed to the practice squad for the Jaguars this season.

In a corresponding move, the Jaguars have signed safety Craig Loston from the practice squad, per the Florida Times-Union's Ryan O'Halloran.
