Sims gets majority of snaps at quarterback in Alabama's win over Southern Miss

Alabama head coach Nick Saban used both of his quarterbacks again Saturday, though the split was far less even than last week. Blake Sims saw most of the action during the 52-12 win over Southern Miss, although Jake Coker did make an appearance in the second half.

Sims finished the game 12-of-17 for 168 yards with a pair of touchdown passes, chipping in 45 yards rushing and another score. Sims made way for Coker later in the third quarter and the former Florida State quarterback was 5-of-7 for 46 yards.

The real key for success for the Crimson Tide was the running game, with Alabama rushing for 333 yards and five touchdowns on 49 attempts. That's more than double the number of times Alabama dropped back to pass in the win over the Golden Eagles.

Saban has seemed hesitant to put Coker in during a close game. He did not play in the season opener against West Virginia and came in against Florida Atlantic with a 21-point lead. That trend continued Saturday with Coker not seeing any action until the Crimson Tide were up by 29 points.

While Saban used both of his quarterbacks in each of the last two games, the way he's done so makes it pretty clear the job belongs to Sims. Based on the way Alabama has run the ball this season it may not matter who plays quarterback anyway, but Coker's lack of impactful playing time makes it difficult to see him unseating Sims as the starter.
