Blue Jays' Bautista on HBP: 'They should have just manned up and hit me with first pitch'

Joy R. Absalon / USA TODAY Sports

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista was well aware that retaliation was coming from the Baltimore Orioles, but wasn't impressed with how long it took to be administered.

Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis was drilled by a 91-mph fastball in the seventh inning by Blue Jays reliever Aaron Loop, prompting Baltimore to hit Bautista the following inning. Bautista knew Darren O'Day's offering was likely destined for his left leg, he just wished the reliever wouldn't have waited until the second pitch to make contact.

The bad blood between the division rivals began in the series opener, when Blue Jays rookie right-hander Marcus Stroman threw behind the head of Orioles catcher Caleb Joesph, prompting warnings to be issued to both benches.

Adding salt in the wound for Bautista and the Blue Jays is the fact that the Orioles clinched the AL East division with Tuesday's 8-2 win.
