Blue Jays' Buehrle notches 14th consecutive 200-inning season
When Toronto Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle completed the sixth inning against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, he accomplished something only six pitchers before him had done since the turn of the 20th century: he crossed the 200-inning threshold...for the 14th consecutive year.
A paragon of consistency, Buehrle has been buoyed by a remarkable resiliency - he has never once been on the disabled list - and an ability to work deep into games. It helps that he's never thrown the ball particularly hard, but that hasn't stopped him from being repeatedly effective. He was pulled after giving up a single in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday, sporting a 3.39 ERA, the third-lowest mark of his career. At age 35, Buehrle just keeps on getting outs.
He's now hurled at least 200 frames every year since his abbreviated rookie campaign with the Chicago White Sox in 2000. In that time, he's racked up 204 more innings than any other pitcher in baseball, and more wins above replacement than all but Roy Halladay and CC Sabathia.
Pitcher | IP | WAR |
---|---|---|
Mark Buehrle | 3,025.1 | 50.8 |
CC Sabathia | 2,821.1 | 61.7 |
Tim Hudson | 2,659 | 42.8 |
Roy Halladay | 2,518.1 | 66.6 |
Barry Zito | 2,477 | 28.5 |
Those also may be the quickest 3,025 1/3 innings ever played.
