Mike Babcock renews confidence that he'll remain in Detroit beyond this season

As Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock enters the final year of his contract with the club, he doesn't appear too concerned about his contract status, reiterating Monday that he believes he'll be back behind Detroit's bench next season.

"I don't think it's going to be my final year here. If it is, it is," Babcock told NHL.com. "I've tried to live my whole life in the present, so what happened yesterday doesn't matter. What we're doing today does matter and we'll get on with it tomorrow. I'll get up every day and try as hard as I can, as I always have."

Babcock's tenure with the club began in 2005. Since that time, he's set the franchise record for wins at 415 and won two Stanley Cups. Despite a few leaner years in the most recent past, he knows Detroit is an ideal spot for any NHL head coach.

“My relationship with my general manager is such that the grass isn't greener on the other side,” Babcock said. “So I understand that totally, so I imagine that will get worked out.”

Still, Babcock maintains he won't negotiate with the team once the puck drops on a new season, meaning questions in regards to his future with the Red Wings are likely to continue until his signature hits a new contract.
