Devils' Clowe on recovery from latest concussion: 'This time I think I got it right'

New Jersey Devils forward Ryane Clowe plans to suit up for the team's final two preseason games in preparation for the season opener on Oct. 9. After suffering a series of three concussion in less than 12 months, Clowe told Tom Gulitti of The Bergen Record he's learned “the effects of what can happen if you come back from a concussion and you’re not 100 percent," and says "this time I think I got it right.”

Clowe continued:

The most important thing, I think, is to take the time, the proper time. I think in the past I might have come back a little too early. It was no one’s fault really. It’s just you as a player thinking you’re ready, but when you get back into it, there’s nothing more frustrating than playing a couple games and getting going again and getting knocked out again. A lot of that has to do with not properly recovering.

So, I think I’ve taken the time. I’ve taken a lot of time off doing actually nothing without even breaking a sweat. So, I’ve rested and I feel like this time more than any - what happens in the future I don’t know, but this time more than any I’ve taken the proper time.

Head coach Pete DeBoer affirmed Clowe's readiness, and is looking forward to getting the rugged forward back on the ice.

“He’s been cleared by everybody that needs to clear him," said the coach, "and he’s looked good in practice, so I’m excited to get him in the lineup.”

Clowe, who is entering the second year of a five-year, $24.25-million deal with the Devils, was limited to 43 games last season, scoring seven goals and adding 19 assists.
