Jets owner Woody Johnson: Rex Ryan's job status to be evaluated after season

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson spoke to reporters at a press conference Thursday amidst the team's 1-3 start.

Johnson would not make a commitment to head coach Rex Ryan beyond this season, saying Ryan's status would be evaluated after the season.

“I think the team and the coaches - they’ve fallen short, that’s for sure," Johnson said, via NJ.com. "But they’ve been in every game. You can either be glass half-full or glass half-empty - you can see signs of being a good team, and a winning team, except for the one or two mistakes that we make in each game. If eliminate those, I think we’ll be good.”

Johnson noted that Ryan's claim on the team's head coaching gig does not hinge on making the playoffs.

“We don’t look at it that way," Johnson said. "We’re looking to build a team both on the field and through our coaches that we feel is the best we can get. And so we make those decisions at the end of the season, when we evaluate everything.”

Asked again whether the team needed to make the postseason or not to save Ryan's job, Johnson stayed the course.

“Those are the kinds of decisions that we make at the end of the season,” Johnson said. “And we’ll evaluate everybody and see what the best plan is going forward.”

Ryan signed a multi-year contract extension with the team in January, but the guaranteed money in the deal only extends through next season.
