Gabi discusses match-fixing scandal involving Real Zaragoza: 'I did what Agapito asked me to do'
Real's Zaragoza's 2-1 win over Levante at the end of the 2010-11 season was an iconic match in Gabi's career as he notched two goals to save Zaragoza from relegation.
However, with the fixture in question being investigated as one of nine games that may have involved match-fixing, Thursday saw Gabi, who is now captaining Atletico Madrid, admit that he received a transfer of €85,000 from Zaragoza that he immediately returned to the then-owner of the club, Agapito Iglesias.
"I did what Agapito asked me to do," Gabi told El Mundo. "I'm unaware if the money went to Levante players or what happened to that money."
When asked whether he was suspicious about how the money was given to him and then taken back, Gabi replied: "As the club was going into bankruptcy, I thought it was."
The 31-year-old defensive midfielder also stated that he asked about the movement of money having potential consequences relating to his taxes, to which Agatipo replied: "Don't worry, anything that comes up the club will sort out."
Players were summoned by the state prosecutor's office in Madrid at the end of September and will be questioned on Friday. Individuals who are found guilty of match-fixing are eligible for a prison sentence.
