Gary Bettman talks expansion, Pronger and domestic violence at opening night press conference

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman held a press conference at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday night ahead of the Kings' home opener, which will be preceded by a banner-raising ceremony.

"I'm not here to break any news, just watch the L.A. Kings raise their banner," Bettman began, before making a headline or two.

The commissioner discussed a variety of issues, including the persistent rumors of NHL expansion - which he poured cold water on once again.

Bettman also discussed the league's reported interest in bringing in oft-suspended, not-quite-retired Philadelphia Flyers employee Chris Pronger.

"I'm not going to confirm that Chris is in fact a candidate, I know it's a rumor," Bettman said by way of ESPN's Craig Custance. "(NHL Department of Player Safety Czar) Stephane Quintal is interviewing a number of former players that he thinks might want to work with him in the department of player safety.

"Chris' case is unique. There are salary cap reasons why he couldn't officially retire, but the fact of the matter is, if in fact we go in that route, I'm not sure that presents any problem at all to deal with. He's done playing. He gets paid no matter what from the Flyers. He doesn't owe them anything."

Finally, Bettman was asked about the slew of domestic violence-related controversies that have rocked the NFL in recent months.

"Our players know what's right and wrong," Bettman boasted, while highlighting that the league works closely with the NHLPA to educate their players about domestic violence.
