Bruins' Chara after shutout loss to Capitals: 'We just got embarrassed'

The reigning President's Trophy-winning Boston Bruins are off to a 1-2-0 start to the new season after dropping a 4-0 decision to the Washington Capitals on home ice Saturday.

After the game, captain Zdeno Chara wasn't mincing words in regards to his team's performance.

"We just got embarrassed, and I think we all have to really look at what we can start doing better, and really take pride in that,” said Chara, according to Joe Haggerty of CSNNE. “A game like tonight is not acceptable. For sure it’s something that we have to correct really fast.

“You can be saying whatever you want, ‘it’s early in the season,’ but these games are as important as a game in the midseason or end of the season. Everybody has to be a lot better."

The Bruins outshot the Capitals by a margin of 29-21, with only 15 of those coming in the final two periods after the team fell behind 2-0 after a pair of goals by Alex Ovechkin in the first. Ultimately, they could not find an answer for Capitals' goalie Braden Holtby, who put in a performance reminiscent of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“I think we were outworked, out-battled, and obviously outplayed over the course of 120 minutes, not just 60,” added veteran forward Chris Kelly, referring to the loss to Washington and a 2-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. "It’s not Bruins hockey. It’s not the way we want to play hockey. Expectations are way higher than that for this group. It’s upsetting.”

The Bruins will have little time to make the necessary adjustments for their next game, with a Monday matinee against Jarome Iginla and the Colorado Avalanche on the horizon.
