Tigers' Miguel Cabrera may require ankle surgery

Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said a decision has yet to be made about whether Miguel Cabrera will undergo offseason surgery for the second straight year.

Cabrera was slowed by a sore right ankle during the second half of the season, and Dombrowski said the club is still mulling whether to address it with surgery.

"There's a spur in there," Dombrowski said Tuesday. "And people tell me if it has to be removed, it is for them a relatively simple procedure."

Cabrera underwent core muscle surgery last winter after winning his second straight American League MVP.

Although the Tigers slugger produced his worst statistical year since 2004, Cabrera still clubbed the most doubles (52) of his career and finished with the most wins above replacement among AL first baseman, according to FanGraphs.

Cabrera's .384 weighted on-base percentage and .524 slugging this season was the fourth highest in the majors at his position.
