Ryan Whitney to sign 1-year deal with KHL's HC Sochi
Free-agent defenseman Ryan Whitney is set to sign a one-year contract with the KHL's HC Sochi, according to the league's official Twitter account.
Whitney recently attended the St. Louis Blues' training camp, but wasn't offered a contract by the club.
Drafted fifth overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2002, Whitney last appeared in the NHL as a member of the Florida Panthers, failing to record a point in seven games last season before being sent down to the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL.
In 481 career games with the Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers and Panthers, Whitney recorded 50 goals and 209 assists. He was also a member of the silver medal-winning U.S. Olympic team in 2010, with dreams of playing in a similar venue before calling it a career.
