Rams to use committee approach at running back

Although St. Louis Rams running back Zac Stacy quietly emerged as a player capable of handling a feature role last season, it appears that the offense will utilize more of a running back-by-committee approach for the rest of this year.

Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that the Rams will look to take advantage of the different styles each running back on the roster possesses, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Lyons.

“Early in the game, we try to get guys multiple touches (and) then we try to go with the hot hand late in the game,’’ Schottenheimer said. “Most places that I’ve been that have really good running games, they had the people to spread the ball around. Different backs bring different types of plays.’’

Similar to what the Rams showed Thursday night against the San Francisco 49ers, this likely means meaningful carries for Stacy, Benny Cunningham and Tre Mason going forward.

While the approach isn't exactly good news for fantasy owners, rotating multiple backs could help the Rams' running game to be at its best for longer stretches, as each player should remain relatively fresh throughout.
