Cowboys waive Michael Sam from practice squad

Michael Sam's journey to the NFL has hit another road block.

The Dallas Cowboys announced Tuesday that Sam has been waived from the team's practice squad.

Sam, the 2013 SEC co-Defensive Player of the Year, became the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL when the St. Louis Rams made him a seventh-round pick. He was released by the team during final roster cuts and signed with the Cowboys' practice squad soon after.

"I want to thank the Jones family and the entire Cowboys organization for this opportunity, as well as my friends, family, teammates, and fans for their support," Sam tweeted Tuesday. "While this is disappointing, I will take the lessons I learned here in Dallas and continue to fight for an opportunity to prove that I can play every Sunday."

In four preseason games with the Rams, Sam racked up 11 tackles and three sacks.
