Texans coach Bill O'Brien backs Ryan Fitzpatrick as starter

Kirby Lee / USA TODAY Sports

Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has won an important vote of confidence.

Head coach Bill O'Brien affirmed Tuesday Fitzpatrick would remain the team's starting quarterback in spite of Houston's 3-4 record after three straight losses.

"Fitzy is our quarterback,” O'Brien told reporters.

Fitzpatrick was named the Texans' starter on June 17, and has so far fended off backup Ryan Mallett.

"We’re going to continue to work with both of these guys in practice, and we’ll see how it improves. And hopefully, it will get better and better, and that will help our offense get better."

Through seven games, Fitzpatrick has thrown for 1,530 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, completing 65.1% of his passes.

Houston will try to get back on track Sunday, facing off against its AFC South-rival Tennessee Titans.
