Oscar Pistorius' jail sentence began Tuesday night in a single cell in the hospital wing of Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria, South Africa.

The former Olympian "seemed confused and tired" upon his arrival at the facility, according to the prison commissioner, writes The Associated Press' Lynsey Chutel. He "was tense as wardens took his fingerprints and the prison chaplain met with him soon after his prison number was issued."

The 27-year-old was found guilty of culpable homicide Tuesday and sentenced to five years for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Feb. 14, 2013. He's the ninth inmate at Kgosi Mampuru with a disability, and will be under routine 24-hour observation.

Pistorius will serve a minimum of 10 months in jail, before he's eligible to serve the rest of his term under house arrest.
