Brett Favre says Austin Davis can be next Tom Brady or Kurt Warner
Brett Favre knows something about going from an unheralded prospect to a Super Bowl champion.
Favre, a second-round pick in 1991 out of Southern Mississippi, infamously wore out his welcome in his lone season with the Atlanta Falcons before being traded to the Green Bay Packers.
It's fitting then that the former three-time MVP compared upstart St. Louis Rams quarterback Austin Davis to a couple of players that had to fight their way into the league.
"Not to sound off my rocker, but (Davis) - in my mind - can be the next Tom Brady or Kurt Warner," Favre told ESPN's Ed Werder.
He may have a point.
Davis took the reins when Sam Bradford and Shaun Hill both went down with injuries and hasn't looked back.
The 25-year-old QB has performed admirably, completing 66 percent of his passes, with nine touchdowns and four interceptions.
Brady and Warner both had to take alternative routes to stardom. The Patriots star became New England's starter when Drew Bledsoe went down with internal bleeding in Week 2 of the 2001 season.
A 24-year-old Brady took over and led the Patriots to their first of three Super Bowl championships that season.
Warner starred in the Arena Football League before the Rams took a chance and signed him in 1998. The following season, Warner became the Rams starter when Trent Green tore his ACL in the preseason.
Warner went on to win a Super Bowl with the Rams during the Greatest Show on Turf era.
While Favre's comments may seem ludicrous upon first glance, history has shown that he may just be on to something.
