Rick Osentoski / USA Today

The Detroit Red Wings took exception to a dirty hit by Los Angeles Kings forward Jordan Nolan in the third period of Friday's game, resulting in a mini-melee with defenseman Jonathan Ericsson in the middle.

Nolan hit Darren Helm into the boards from behind and was immediately chased down and tackled by Ericsson, attracting the attention of the rest of the players on the ice. Things escalated quickly:

The referees sorted out the pileup and assessed two penalties - a boarding call on Nolan for the hit, and a roughing penalty on Ericsson for the retaliation.

Detroit eventually won the game 5-2, dropping Los Angeles to 0-2-2 on the road.
